Just submitted an application to the Awesome Foundation @awesomefound for the set-up of an aquaponics system in Freetown, Sierra Leone. We promote gender equality, sustainable farming and food security.

At Salone Aquaponic we are looking to set up our first pilot system in urban Freetown, Sierra Leone. We will construct a so called CHOP system (Constant height, One pump) including a biofilter for improved nutrient availability and plant and fish health.

Deep frying tilapia

Tilapia is an excellent tasting fresh water fish, that reproduce at a very fast rate. The fish is not farmed commercially in Sierra Leone yet, but wild catches from nearby streams and lakes are sold in the local markets across Sierra Leone under the name "Mango Perch". Here we see the live tilapia, as well as oil fried tilapia.

Today we received 2 breeding sets of tilapia. 2 male and 12 female tilapia will start to produce the fish fry for the bigger tanks.
We would like to thank you to the Family Kingdom Resort, Freetown for providing us the tilapia! Thank you very much!
