The aquaponic system shows a good start and plants and fish are growing well in the system. Aquaponic is a fast and secure method to grow vegetables and fish without expensive fertilizer, agrochemicals and labour costs. Aquaponic vegetable production is much faster and deliver high yields compared to traditional labour intensive agriculture. For Sierra Leone, aquaponic is a new business opportunity for entreprenuers in the agricultural sector as well as NGO´s and private companies, looking for secure food supply. Stay tuned for our upcoming new systems...

The system has currently extremly low EC and TDS values. After some weeks when nitrifying bacteria take up their activity, more nutrients will be available in the system. At the moment the system only have 90 microsiemens electronic conductivity (EC), which equates to around 30 ppm total dilute solids (TDS). Well established system will have between 800 and 1200 EC.
Checking PH ,TDS and EC is a necessary management practice in aquaponic farming. Regular monitoring is therefore crucial.
The PH is currently at 7,1. This will also go down further, once bacteria are fully collonized in the filter. A very good PH value will be around 6,5 - 6,2. That will benefit the plants and is also not harmful to the tilapia and prawns.
